I stared in the mirror at my new haircut for quite some time today. Change is always remarkable… Well, drastic change is always remarkable. Gradual change can catch us off guard…
I stared for two reasons.
First – The cut was a good 1 – 1 ½ inches shorter than I had requested. When I said cut an inch off she cut off at least two in some places… I’m over it… It grows fast… I am just going to look really butch for a few weeks which sort of makes me uncomfortable but I’ll live…

Second – I stared at my hair because it is finally its natural color. It took far longer than I expected but all of the dyed hair has been cut off now… I have not seen my natural hair color since about high school. When my sister started taking cosmetology classes my hair ceased to be its natural color. As I stared into the mirror today I actually shouted at the mirror, “Fuck! Blonde. You really are blonde…” I have typically dyed it dark brown or black. I had almost forgotten on some level about the blonde…
It is a darker blonde than I remembered it being but blond nonetheless… I wonder if my memory of a lighter blonde was simply false or if my hair itself changed over the years but because of the dye I never could tell…
How many aspects of who we are change without use even taking notice…

I usually lurk.... but I have to pop out and say I LOVE IT!! I think it's so flattering on you! It has such a pretty wave. I don't think you look butch, more pixie, but if you're worried about it, how do you feel about more dramatic earrings? My hair is about your length and I buy earrings on Etsy compulsively. Good prices and ethical manufacturing, and you can find any size and style.
ReplyDeleteI like it, both the cut and the color!
ReplyDeleteJust spend some time in the sun. The highlights might surprise you.
ReplyDeleteI once, when I had really really really really long hair, died it jet black. It was striking. The funny thing about that was, I had always imagined my hair to be black but I didn't realize that my image of black wasn't really all that back until I made my hair truly black. I totally looked like a Gothic vampire. Yeah, it was actually pretty cool! But then, it started falling out so I had to go for something else. I wonder if I have any pictures of myself with the long black look.
ReplyDeleteLiking the hair!
